Video Professors

HOW MANY CLASSES MUST I TAKE?

You’ve been working at your job for the past three years. Your position requires you to interface with the public, organize inventory, work on a computer. These first two duties come naturally to you, and you enjoy them. You’re a people person, and you like to keep things in order. The challenge is your lack of computer skills. You know just enough to get by. You’ve never received any formal training , and graduated from high school before the explosion of computer technology. The strain of not being computer literate is taking its toll. You’ve decided it’s time to get some training--take a college class, or maybe an online course, like the ones you’ve seen advertised by Video Professor. Since you’re not comfortable with high tech devices, you decide a classroom setting would work best for you.
There’s a community college that offers computer training not far from your job . You assume the tuition should be within your budget, and hope they offer a class that fits within your work schedule; a weekend seminar would be great. The Video Professor online classes can be taken at any time of the day, any day of the week, but you’re still not comfortable with the concept. And though Video Professor makes learning computers sound easy, taking a class with a “live” instructor sounds easier.
You visit the community college and pick up a brochure on computer training. There’s a two page listing of various courses, most of which make no sense to you. Do you need “Beginning Computer,” or “Beginning Word?” What about “Beginning Windows?” After you take a beginner’s course, will you need to move on to intermediate classes, and then advanced to become proficient on the computer? You look for an advisor to address your questions, but they’re busy counseling anxious young students, who appear to be fresh out of high school.
You dig in and study the details of the schedule. Each class consists of two meetings, presented in four hour blocks. These include afternoon sessions during the week, which conflict with your job. Early evening sessions are offered, but they also overlap with your work schedule. No weekend seminars. You need training that offers more flexible scheduling. The prospect of taking an online course, like Video Professor, in which you choose your own hours is sounding more attractive. But you’re still not sure if that’s the right learning method for you.
Then you look at the prices of the courses offered by the community college. They range from $150, to almost $300--for just two class meetings. You could understand the cost if these were semester-length courses. But they aren’t. What if you don’t understand a concept and require some review? Is that included in the price? With Video Professor you’re learning at your own pace. This allows you to go over the material as often as you need to. Tossing the brochure, you head back to work, sit down at your computer, and login to videoprofessor.com.
